New Adventures for 2024

Let's kick things off with a little intro from us in week 1

Naomi

So, I've officially started my new gig at a Government Primary School in South Perth, working part-time with the Year 5 and 6 classes. Luckily, I already felt quite at home there: I’ve worked there as part of FORM's Creative Schools program, I’ve been on the school board, and I’ve spent quite a few days there as a relief teacher. (This didn’t stop me trying to lead a class the wrong way to the Music room, though).

Starting to get to know these kids with their quirks and interests has been a blast already. I stuck up some images about my own story and interests, and they drew images to tell me about theirs. Now I can see the classroom as a group of individuals with passions for everything from cricket to gemstones to spaghetti bolognese.

thinking about the year of the dragon this week

I won't lie, the first week had its clumsy moments, and I second-guessed myself A LOT. But things can only get better! What matters most is that these kids are already stepping up, taking charge of their learning. The Year 6s came up with their class contract, voting on seven statements to include. Their last point on the list tells you a lot about them: "Never stop flying towards your goals."

I'm excited about what's to come, looking forward to flying high with these kids.

Shona

Earlier this year while on the hunt for a little extra employment that was purposeful by nature, I came across an ad for a private teacher to work with home schooling families in a ‘drop and leave’ program. On further exploration I met the wonderful home schooling parents, Shona and Kate, who were looking to create a program for parents who wanted early childhood learning for their kids in a more structured setting but didn’t think they were ready for full time kindy or preschool just yet.

Our aim is to create a flexible learning hub that will have a creative thinking focus and utilise the benefits of play, inquiry and project-based learning to give these kiddos the ability to think for themselves, problem solve and feel like they have a voice as a learner. Whether they carry on with home schooling indefinitely or return to the conventional education system when they feel ready, I’m sure we’re going to have some fun in 2024 having the time and space to explore meaningful, slower paced learning together.

Shona, Kate & Shona (and friend)

Week one was an open meet and greet for parents to come and see the facilities and meet with Kate, Shona and myself. The 40+ degree heat did not inspire a huge turnout, but we will be there again next week in cooler weather (fingers crossed!) to meet with all the families who had flagged their interest in the Foothills Learning Hub.

Until next week... stay curious x
